Why Support Gas Lamp?

  • Our budgets for shows like “Seussical” and “King and I” are over $20,000!  The performance rights alone cost $4000-6000, sound and lighting cost $2500-5000, and music/orchestra budgets run from $3000-6000;
  • We never turn away a student for financial reasons.  We budget $2500 a year for financial assistance;
  • Scholarships for graduating seniors pursuing the performing arts in college are part of our yearly budget.  In 2007, we awarded $2500 in scholarships for graduating seniors;
  • Transforming the dilapidated and abandoned garage space at 17 Herman Street into Gas Lamp’s home base and the Costume Shop not only took all of our reserves from past shows, but also required a $30,000 loan, of which $26,000 is still outstanding;
  • The arts are vital to our children.  In the words of Sergeant Robert Griffin, Glen Ridge Police:  “In my opinion, Gas Lamp provides one of the best experiences for children.  It keeps them off the streets and involved in something positive and character building.  It occupies them for months with a true sense of purpose doing something extremely positive, very educational, and that truly teaches a sense of community.”
